No, do not "loosen the big nut in the center of the steering axis"! That nut is for assembly of the steering bearings. It is not like an automobile where the steering wheel is positioned on splines, so that the cross spoke is horizontal.
The handle bars are clamped separate. The cycle fork and or the bars, cannot be compared to the steering wheel assembley of a car!
